108 karanas in Indian Classical Dances

What does 108 karanas in Indian classical dance mean? How to choose and include them in dance?

A karana is included in the dance sequence at an important juncture. Thus dance becomes a complete expression.Hence that karana would represent the essence of dance!

There used to be devadasis who performed all the 108 karanas, but now in most contemporary Bharatanatyam or Odissi schools only a small number of karanas and their derivatives have been transmitted by parampara up to date.

Shiva is the lord of asana practice with 84 lakhs of asanas said to have derived from his movements. This shows Shiva’s connections with the numerous Yoga asanas known and unknown. As Nataraj, the lord of the dance, his dance and gestures also reflect yoga postures, starting with the 108 main traditional poses of Indian dance.

If you master eight postures in kalari, you know the essence of fighting. If you know,108 karanas of Shiva then that's complete wisdom on dance ,Shiva.and nature ( * Transition *).

Moving Archetypes is an interesting usage.

108 karanas correspond to the ascend of Kundalini energy through sushumna from muladhara. And originally there are 108 chakras in human body.

So when energy rises by dance applying  tandava lakshana the energy reaches the specific among these 108 chakras and hence transformation happens in the mind of the dancer. So karana can bring the mental state of the character especially archetypical perfect characters depicted in the classical dance!

So if lakshana refers to the application for karanas then transformation happens at intended time. And rechaka makes it aesthetic along with other movements in dance like gamaka in music.Hence karana needs intense meditation for long continuous period so that it works precisely whenever you wish in dance. And a dance choreographer should essentially know it's point of application in the sequence.
